Pope calls for more prayer

2003-10-16 21:38

Vatican City - Pope John Paul II called on Catholics around the world on Thursday to pray that he will have the strength to continue to lead the Church, during mass to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his election.

"I ask you please, very dear brothers and sisters to not interrupt this grand work of love for the successor of Peter," he pleaded in a section of his homily read for him by an aide, Leonardo Sandri.

"I am asking you once again, help the pope and those who want to serve Christ, to serve man and serve the entire humanity."

Sandri began reading John Paul's homily when the tired pope appeared short of breath. John Paul resumed reading after a few minutes.

The 83-year-old Church leader, slouched on his throne as he was wheeled onto the altar by aides, earlier greeted the tens of thousands of pilgrims packed into St Peter's Square by singing a hymn in praise of Jesus Christ.

His voice trembled as an aide held a microphone close to his mouth.

German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger said in a brief homily read at the start of the mass that the pope "is like a mother looking after her children".

"In his life, the word 'cross' was not just a word," said the cardinal, referring to John Paul II's illnesses.

The pope suffers from Parkinson's disease and arthritis, and has appeared increasingly fatigued during his public engagements in recent weeks.
