Vatican City - Some 300 umbrellas from the lost property office of the Vatican Museums have been donated to the homeless, the prelate who manages Pope Francis' personal charity fund told the ANSA news agency on Thursday.

Papal Alimoner Monsignor Konrad Krawjewski announced the initiative while large parts of Italy, including Rome, were being hit by heavy showers.

Francis, who said after his election in 2013 that he wanted to lead "a poor church, for the poor," had previously asked Krawjeski to offer free showers and free haircuts for homeless people who live around the Vatican.

Both services should be offered starting from 16 February.
