Priest close to sainthood

Vatican City - The Vatican says a Belgian priest who ministered to leprosy patients in Hawaii is close to sainthood.

The Vatican says that Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday approved a miracle attributed to the Reverend Damien de Veuster. Father Damien was beatified in 1995 so the latest approval means he will be canonised at a date still to be set.

Damien ministered to leprosy patients who had been banished to remote islands after an epidemic in Hawaii in the 1850s. The Belgian-born priest contracted the disease and died in 1889 at 49.

The Vatican approved as a miracle the healing of a Honolulu woman diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. She was cured in 1999 after she visited the island where Damien worked and prayed to the priest.

This will not change with the new elected Libyan government. Gaddafi needed the money. The new government needs the money. Secondly, 134 of the 151 countries on Earth voted in the UN General Assembly that Assad is an illegitimate leader and must step down. He is probably the most unpopular non-leader in the world today. He is being propped up by Putin, who is sending him weapons on an almost monthly basis, and the similarly illegitimate and oppressive Iranian regime. That's it. No other country of note is actively supporting him. The autocratic Chinese regime is not. It is isolationist, against a concerted effort to stop him from killing Syrians. China is not good at working with other countries. It has isolated itself for decades, only coming out of Communism now. China has the worst human rights record of any country. Up to 70 million Chinese people were killed by their government in Mao's Cultural Revolution and under Communist rule. It is no bellwether for human rights and individual freedoms.
