Pussy Riot 'will not ask Putin for pardon'

2012-08-20 14:00

Moscow - The three members of punk band Pussy Riot sentenced to two years in prison for performing an anti-Vladimir Putin song in Russia's top church will not ask the president for a pardon, their lawyer said on Monday.

"Our clients will not ask for a pardon," defence lawyer Nikolai Polozov said on Monday, adding: "Literally this is what they said: 'Let them go to hell with their pardon'."

Band members Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich on Friday were each found guilty of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" for their 21 February protest in the Christ the Saviour Cathedral and handed two-year jail terms.

The West decried the sentencing, with the United States saying it was "disproportionate" and the European Union calling the punishment excessive.

Polozov said the defence team planned to appeal as soon as they received a copy of the verdict.

They should have been sentenced for their appalling singing voices not the message they conveyed!

You have to admit, as offensive as their actions have been to many people; had they been ignored, the whole episode would have gone by largely unnoticed. Now it's international news... Another example of the so-called Streisand effect :-)

very true Why so few people who really understand what is going on?

When you can go to jail for peeving the church off you know there's something wrong.

There certainly is something wrong in Russia, where their 'democracy' consists of -----------" A NOISY CIRCUS EVERY 4 OR 5 YEARS "----------- and that's it !!!!

Go Pussy Riot!! Always wanted to say that!!... The fact that these girls stood up to be different and for a cause makes them phenomenal!! The support around the world has shown that there is an awakening happening of the younger generations... and the older generations just can't take it!!! hahahahahaha!! Wake up oldies!! In 20 years our Judges and presidents will have tattoos and listen to Hip-Hop or Pop or whatever... the world constantly changes, and they older generation have been in control for too long...

      sansagain.sansagain - 2012-08-21 08:23

Do you know their history and what they were doing before? Find it and you will fill very awkwardly defending them. HipHop or Pop is Ok. But what they were doing it is behind red line already

      stefan.kruger.1297 - 2012-08-21 10:26

Nope.. sorry to say dude, but id defend anyone standing up against a government, political or religious structure... People are scared to say what they want or they will be locked up... look at the guy from Wiki-leaks... seriously... Governments have mindf*#ed everyone from the beginning of their existence... dictators free themselves and enslave the people... we are the stupid ones still listening.. hahahaha... a couple of BILLION of people is taken commands from a couple of 100's of people... and everything begins with change, if you cant change yourself, then you'll never be able to change the world... and everything starts with yourself...

such people like these women are not going to do any good to the world. They are going only to get more hatred between people.

      stefan.kruger.1297 - 2012-08-21 14:58

Well according to the support it doesn't really show hatred... But I do get what your saying.. the only thing I'm saying is that its good to see young people starting movements like these... think about it dude... and with an open mind... Younger generations will be the cause of the awakening... everyday younger people are becoming more open towards change... and unfortunately governments have taken away much of the privileges of being even a Human... Like we have different countries in one continent for example, South Africa, Nigeria, Zimbabwe... Now I know they have been there forever, but don't you think its a bit selfish to call it different countries instead of just AFRICA... People need to Unite together to make a change, exactly what's happening with Malema now... People hate him because of what he's doing, and how he's doing it... but the real facts needs to be looked at... Hes fighting for people that didn't have anything for years, even from the end of apartheid till now... anyways dude, everything is perception... its how you perceive it...
