Washington - A strong 7.4 earthquake that shook an area in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of El Salvador early on Monday has generated a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

"Sea level readings confirm that a tsunami was generated," the centre said in a bulletin.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the quake took place at a depth of 54km and issued a tsunami warning for all Central American nations and Mexico.

It warned that this tsunami may be "destructive along the coastlines of the region.

"Authorities in the region should take appropriate action in response to this possibility," the centre said.
