Fort Bragg - No damage or injuries have been reported after a 4.3 magnitude earthquake rattled the coastal area in far Northern California.

The US Geological Survey says the quake hit at 05:05 on Sunday about 5km northwest of Fort Bragg in Mendocino county.

Initially the earthquake had been reported as a 4.2 magnitude quake, but the USGS upgraded the quake after it was reviewed by a seismologist.

A Fort Bragg police dispatcher said there had been no damage, but said police did receive calls from city residents about the quake.

Fort Bragg is about 225km north of San Francisco.
