London - Britain's royal family plans to invite about 10 000 people to a huge street party to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday next year, according to reports on Thursday.

Peter Phillips, the queen's 37-year-old grandson, is organising the party, set to take place along The Mall, the avenue leading to Buckingham Palace, the queen's official residence in London.

The queen was "excited" by the prospect of the party on June 12, the Press Association quoted Phillips as saying.

Most of those invited to the Patron's Lunch will come from the 600 charities and other organisations supported by the queen.

"We want to reflect the service she's given to all her organisations and charities ... and provide the opportunity for her patronages and other communities around the country to say thank you," Phillips said.

The queen and other senior members of the royal family are scheduled to attend the lunch, he said.

A service to mark the queen's birthday is planned in London's St Paul's Cathedral on June 10, launching a weekend of celebrations.

Several events are also planned in May, including four at Windsor Castle, another royal residence west of London, the BBC reported.
