Cairo - Saudi Arabia and several other Arab countries have announced that the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan will start on Sunday.

Saudi Arabia, home to Islam's holiest sites, said Saturday will be the final day of the lunar month of Shaaban. Similar official announcements were made by religious authorities in Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt and Syria. Yemen announced Ramadan will begin on Saturday.

The beginning and end of Ramadan depends on the sighting of the new moon. During Ramadan, devout Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to sunset.
