Los Angeles - Opening statements are set to begin in the trial of a US man accused of beating an aging priest who he says molested him and his younger brother more than 35 years ago.

William Lynch faces felony charges of assault and elder abuse. Prosecutors say he beat the Reverend Jerold Lindner at a retirement home for priests in 2010.

The trial is set to begin Wednesday in California.

The 44-year-old Lynch says he and his brother were molested by Lindner during a camping trip years ago.

According to a lawsuit, the brothers, who were 7 and 4 at the time, were raped in the woods and forced to have oral sex with each other while Lindner watched.

The priest has denied abusing the Lynch boys.
