Rio de Janeiro - Brazilian security forces killed seven suspected drug traffickers early on Wednesday in a heavily-armed operation after a wave of violence overnight in Rio's squalid slums, police said.

The suspects died in a shoot-out with agents who stormed into Rio's slums that roiled with unrest in the wake of a massive security operation begun on Tuesday aimed at rooting out gangs and drug-trafficking groups, according to police.

One person was arrested in the operation that was launched after at least 16 vehicles including public buses were set ablaze and a police station was shot up by suspected drugs gangs.
