Romania: 240kg woman gives birth

Bucharest - Romanian doctors say a woman weighing 240kg has given birth through caesarean section to a healthy baby.

Bucharest University Emergency Hospital says 25-year-old Victoria Lacatus gave birth Thursday to a girl weighing 2.9kg. She is the heaviest woman known to have given birth in Romania.

Spokesperson Bogdan Popescu says the mother is being carefully monitored for post-surgery complications because she is morbidly obese.

Lacatus was transported from her village in southern Romania to Bucharest because the local city hospital didn't have any beds that could bear her weight.
