Moscow - A Russian military intelligence specialist was sentenced to 14 years in prison for treason for including classified information in a job application to an affiliate of Sweden's Defence Ministry, state media reported on Monday.

Gennady Kravtsov, who worked as a satellite specialist in Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate from 1990 until 2005, wrote some information about Russian satellite reconnaissance in the application, which he sent in 2010.

Russian authorities discovered the letter on his computer during a search of his property in 2013 after he applied to a similar job in Belarus, a close ally of Russia.

The number of convictions for treason in Russia grew from four in 2013 to 15 last year, the RBC news agency reported, citing the Supreme Court.

Russia's relations with the West fell to a post-Cold War low following Russia's annexation of Crimea in spring 2014.
