Santorum leads Romney in US poll

Washington - White House hopeful Rick Santorum has opened an eight-point lead over presumptive frontrunner Mitt Romney among likely Republican voters nationwide, a new poll showed on Sunday.

Gallup's daily tracking poll showed that 36% of those surveyed said they supported the Christian conservative, while 28% said they preferred the former Massachusetts governor.

Less than a week ago, Romney was leading Santorum, a former US senator from Pennsylvania, by two points, putting the two candidates in a statistical tie.

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich trails the two leaders with 13%, while veteran libertarian Texas congressman Ron Paul was not far behind with 11%, the poll showed.

Santorum - who surprised Romney with wins in nominating contests earlier this month in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado - is now trying to maintain his momentum for the February 28 primary in Michigan, Romney's home turf.

The Gallup poll was conducted from Tuesday through to Saturday among about 1 200 likely Republican voters. The margin of error is plus or minus four percentage points.

In late August the Republicans will confirm their candidate to face Democrat Barack Obama in the November 6 presidential election.

Santorum is a crackpot religious fundie who is anti-everything. God help America should he ever get elected. But like most of the uber-religious he is a hypocrite and Obama will trounce him.

This is unfortunate debate news. I was hoping to see a repeat of Mitt's game of “me too” conservative catch up from CPAC. You know, Gingrich tenuously connects himself to Reagan; Romney tenuously connects to Reagan. Santorum angrily invokes family values; Romney angrily invokes family values. Dr. Ron Paul says he's delivered 4,000 babies; Romney says he's delivered babies too, by strapping them to a car roof and visiting the grandparents. I cannot believe Ron Paul isn't streaks ahead of those clowns! So sad!
