Saudi accuses 9 of starting riots

2012-01-24 20:29

Riyadh - A Saudi official says police have detained nine men accused of instigating riots in the eastern city of Qatif, home to the country's Shi'ite minority.

Interior ministry spokesperson Major General Mansour al-Turki said on Tuesday all nine were arrested at a house used as one of their hideouts.

The ministry said earlier this month that three security men were injured when Shi'ite protesters threw firebombs at a security vehicle, setting it on fire. Police killed one demonstrator and wounded another.

Hundreds of Shi'ites took to the streets the next day, protesting the killing.

Saudi Arabia has not experienced unrest on the scale of the uprisings that have hit other Arab nations over the past year, but Shi'ites have staged some protests demanding more rights.

The UK/US is selling arms and providing diplomatic support to one of the most repressive theocratic regimes on earth, while simultaneously declaring their 'love for democracy'. They've assisted Bahrain's Saudi-backed violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests. The Saudis are in a privileged position, being both allies and customers of western governments and their corporate paymasters. Saudi Arabia sending observers to Syria. Don't you just love it!!! They could just observed the same thing at home.

"Saudi Arabia sending observers to Syria. Don't you just love it!!! They could just observed the same thing at home." Mthuthuzeli 70 people died in Syria just yesterday. Please don’t compare Saudi to Syria (apples & oranges). I do agree Saudi needs change and I have no doubt it is on its way. The people of Syria will eventually get their way; just like they have in Libya, Egypt & Yemen... and soon to be Saudi, Bahrain and Iran.

Your are being disingenous, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia aren't going anywhere and you know that. There's that thing of the US 5th fleet stationed in that country. Taking into account that Obama's administration have recently signed a $30bn arms deal with Saudi Arabia, are still shipping arms to Bahrain. The Saudis have lots of oil and lots of money. They are an important market for western businesses (ie construction, defense). The US/UK are so morally screwed-up, especially in their foreign policy, that, they can make war and hypocrisy appear virtuous. Listening to Hillary Clinton or Hague pontificate on Middle Eastern affairs is a nauseating affront to reason – and proves how far the US and UK have crawled into their own bunker of ignorance.

Boaz - Libya is a mess, Western Countries have thier troops protecting oil installations while normal civillians - Saudi Procured approximatley $5 billion worth of American military harware last year just like they did in Iraq. The West is dividing the Arab world along ethnic lines the yalready succed in Sudan and Iraq, Pakistan is almost there - Got to give it to the West they are clever MF's with many cneturies worth of colonisation under their belts

The mission of the West is clear. Concentrate on the enemies or less favoured countries in that region and do it in a way so people forget the problems in the friendly countries. This gives the West space and cover up to defend and enhance its hegemony. All talk about democracy and human rights is BS designed to placate the jelly brained who believe in western exceptionalism.
