Belfast - A top member of the political wing of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), Denis Donaldson, confirmed on Friday he was a British agent for two decades, an admission that prompted his expulsion from the party.
Donaldson, a senior Sinn Fein leader, said he had been recruited by British intelligence in the 1980s after "compromising" himself during a vulnerable moment in his life.
"I deeply regret my activities with British intelligence and RUC PSNI (Royal Ulster Constabulary Police Service of Northern Ireland) special branch," he said in a statement on Irish television monitored in Belfast.
