Vienna - Austrian daredevil skydiver Felix Baumgartner was convicted and fined on Tuesday for a road rage case in which he punched a lorry driver in the face.

The 2010 incident, which became publicly known last week, has dented the image of the 43-year-old who became the first man to break the sound barrier in free-fall last month.

An appeals court in Salzburg upheld a verdict from April, in which Baumgartner was found guilty of bodily injury and sentenced to a fine of €1 500.

In September 2010, Baumgartner stepped into an argument between a Greek lorry driver and a German motorist in a traffic jam in Salzburg. Baumgartner took the side of the German.

Baumgartner had appealed the verdict, arguing that he acted in self-defence after the Greek man kicked him.
