Smoking healthier than being gay: Christian group

2012-09-06 11:38

Sydney - Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Thursday withdrew from speaking at a Christian lobby conference after its head suggested smoking was healthier than a gay and lesbian lifestyle.

Gillard was due to address the Australian Christian Lobby's meeting in October but pulled out over the "offensive" and "inappropriate" comments about homosexuality.

It followed ACL chief Jim Wallace, whose ultra-conservative group lobbies for Christian principles and ethics, on Wednesday making the claim during a debate on same-sex marriage.

"I think we're going to owe smokers a big apology when the homosexual community's own statistics for its health - which it presents when it wants more money for health - are that it has higher rates of drug-taking, of suicide, it has the life of a male reduced by up to 20 years," he said.

"The life of smokers is reduced by something like seven to 10 years and yet we tell all our kids at school they shouldn't smoke."

After the debate, Wallace said the figures saddened him.

"But what I'm saying is we need to be aware that the homosexual lifestyle carries these problems and ... normalising the lifestyle by the attribution of marriage, for instance, has to be considered in what it does encouraging people into it."

Offensive

Gillard, an atheist who opposes legalising gay marriage, said debate about the issue should be "respectful and responsible".

"I believe yesterday's comments by Jim Wallace were offensive," she said in a statement.

"To compare the health effects of smoking cigarettes with the many struggles gay and lesbian Australians endure in contemporary society is heartless and wrong.

"Although everyone is entitled to their own view, these statements reiterated again today on behalf of ACL are totally unacceptable.

"In light of this, I believe my attendance at the conference would be inappropriate."

Marriage is covered by federal legislation in Australia which defines it as between a man and a woman, so while civil same-sex unions are recognised in several states, the couples are not considered "married" by the national government.

Same-sex couples have, however, the same rights as heterosexual couples in areas such as pension schemes and medical benefits.

Your Prime Minister is an Irish national , right ?????

      gordon.turner.37 - 2012-09-06 12:24

no, Zulu. But the Ozzie one is Welsh... Which is like Ireland, just on another Island where they speak Cymraeg not Goidelic and mine coal not potatoes.

"Smoking healthier than gay sex" - Snorting cocaine is healthier than being indoctrinated with religion. At least with regard to your mental health.

  • CaptainGaza - 2012-09-06 12:06

Once again, xtians telling people how to live their lives.

      vlarismam - 2012-09-06 12:09

      and other religions don't?

      phillip.hoffman.7146 - 2012-09-06 12:16

I dont see anyone telling anyone how to live their lives, in the article. The risk of two lifestyles are compared. No-one is telling people how to live.

      CaptainGaza - 2012-09-06 12:24

You chappies need to read between the lines. Why is it a xtian group and not a health organization making the statement??? I stick to my orginal comment, xtians telling people how to live their lives!! What a joke!

      juannepierre - 2012-09-06 13:48

@Phillip, being gay is not a lifestyle, it's a culture.

  • qhuggett - 2012-09-06 12:07

There are no lengths these theists will go to, to keep their delusional world intact. Pathetic.

  • charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-06 12:08

Both lifestyles are high-risk and dangerous. (And don't call me homophobe, I'm entitled to state my opinion without having to be called names by insecure people who feel judged).

      JohanCduToit - 2012-09-06 12:20

I don't think a committed gay/lesbian relationship is any more dangerous than a heterosexual relationship. But smoking is definitely dangerous to you physical health, and believing in an imaginary man in the sky is definitely dangerous to your mental health.

      kerryann.holtzhausen - 2012-09-06 12:24

yes Charles, you are entitled to your opinion and it is your human right to not like or tolerate gay people. Please could you explain to me how can a same-sex relationship physically be dangerous. I am not really understanding.

      felix.feline.3 - 2012-09-06 12:26

Just how you don't judge the opinions of all the atheists on mynews24.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-06 12:30

Kerry - don't shoot the messenger. Go do a little research (Google is your friend) and look at the high-risk factors involved in gay sex. Look at infection rates of dangerous diseases and also see global statistics of life expectancies and the high rates of substance abuse and suicide. Not my info, but it's there for you to go read up on.

      juannepierre - 2012-09-06 12:31

@Charles... The problem is one is a choice, the other not, so if you are not a homophobe then you're an idiot. Your choice of course.

      mike.boylen - 2012-09-06 12:33

@charlesdumbwin.dumbwin. Do you realise how many young gay people commit suicide because good, caring, christians like yourself constantly tell them what dirty, evil sinners they are. Unable to change what they are, they see suicide as their only choice. You should be so proud of yourself.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-06 12:34

No one mentioned anything about 'choice', except you. Feeling judged?

      juannepierre - 2012-09-06 12:35

Commenting is a privilege not a right. Smoking is a choice. Anyone who does not get that... I don't know then. Education is pointless.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-06 12:37

Oh mike, that's so terribly convenient, blaming the high suicide rate of homosexuals on Christians. Oh please, do me a favour. If you have statistical proof of your claims, that it's because of Christian condemnation that homosexuals commit suicide, then please provide such evidence?

      mike.boylen - 2012-09-06 12:46

It's a regular pattern of yours to demand statistics from others whilst failing to provide any yourself. I have no statistics to hand, just 30 years experience working in psychiatry, many of those spent as a sex therapist. Before you ask, yes I am fully qualified and registered in both SA and Great Britain.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-06 12:48

Oh great, then you're in a position to provide those stats then? Excellent. Let's have them. Let's see this pattern of yours...

      mbossenger - 2012-09-06 13:01

Charles - I doubt the sexual orientation of a person is captured on a death certificate, so how does one determine there is a higher suicide rate amongst gays?

      mike.boylen - 2012-09-06 13:08

Typical again Charles. You're really living up to your second name. I said I don't have statistics to hand, but a quick look through my client numbers for the last 10 years show that I have seen 837 young gay people who all had problems with their sexuality because of what they saw as negative influences from society. Most of those, and I'm talking well into 90%, quoted religious pressures. Give me a few days and I can probably provide you with more accurate statistics. These numbers don't include those who have been pressured into heterosexual marriages and feel miserable and suicidal.

      JohanCduToit - 2012-09-06 13:09

Mohau, the USA is not at all a "permissive and secular society". Even today same-sex marriage is legal in only six states!

      mike.boylen - 2012-09-06 13:10

Sorry. Hit the wrong key. That should be 537, not 837.

      juannepierre - 2012-09-06 13:41

@Charles, your a quirky little fellow, how bout we get together and I teach you a thing or two about gays??? About men??? About yourself???

      juannepierre - 2012-09-06 13:46

You wanna hear something else that is true... Woman are all being raped by straight men than their gay brothers .

      JohanCduToit - 2012-09-06 14:24

Mohau, the point I was trying to make is that the USA (incl New York) is not as "permissive and secular" as many people think. That is all. And if gay people in New York feel that they need to remain "in the closet", then obviously they are still being discriminated against by Christians. And no, I don't hate Christians. I just feel sorry for them.

Some skeletons in that closet of yours perhaps? • CoolJay21 - 2012-09-06 12:16

Why are Christians so fascinated with Sodomy, so what if other guys want bang other guys up the rear end, and girls want to do each other. There are more important things to worry about. Smokers should be allowed to smoke as well freely and without prejudice, only when they do get ill, they should not expect the state to pay their bills, they should just crawl into a ball and die.

      afrikeni - 2012-09-06 12:37

      Now thats fairness!

      ludlowdj - 2012-09-06 12:38

Because sodomy, or more precisely homosexuality was practiced by large parts of the population in those days. The Roman armies were especially well known to have actively practiced bi-sexuality.

Christianity seems to be detrimental to its members mental and spiritual well being, These so called "Christians" are supplying a plethora of evidence that this religion actually causes spiritual retardation, hate and arb results so far removed from anything to do with Christ or the "god" of love and Forgiveness... If their "god" really did exist, I am sure he would have smote and punished these Christians in the harshest possible manner.

  • janalbert.vandenberg - 2012-09-06 14:06

Being socially ostrasized is what leads to "unhealthy" lifestyles. If you are told, day in and day out, that you *deserve* punishment because you are *worthless* then sooner or later you'll believe it. Of course, every Christian that tells gays off do so apparently as an act of "love". Which must be the biggest distortion of what "love" could possibly ever be, but what do I know? I know that those conservative Christians that say such things think themselves to be so much better than others, and they *love* to hate, and they *need* something to hate... so if not black people, or liberals, or... or... or... they will find for themselves something which they can all hate, because oddly enough such a concerted hatred spurns community, doesn't it? And so as a community they can all revel in that hatred until some kid somewhere commits suicide for being ostrasized. And what does our "loving" conservative Christian say about this? "Oh, it's because of the lifestyle, and we just wanted them not to get HIV, use drugs... we were the very mirror of Christiandom in our oh so holiness". And not a single one of them sees the harm, pain, and hurt they inflict, because they are blinded by hatred.
