Storms pound US South, Midwest - 2 dead
Birmingham - Two people died as storms pounded the US South and Midwest, prompting tornado warnings in a handful of states early on Monday.
A sheriff's spokesperson in Jefferson County, Alabama, said a 16-year-old boy and an 82-year-old man were killed.
A storm system produced a possible tornado that moved across Jefferson County around 03:30, Randy Christian said. He said several homes were destroyed.
Elsewhere in the area, searchers were going house-to-house in an effort to rescue people trapped in homes.
"Some roads are impassable, there are a number of county roads where you have either debris down, trees down, damage from homes," said Yasamie Richardson, a spokesperson for the Alabama Emergency Management Agency.
Tornado warnings were issued for parts of Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama.
