Rome - Italian customs officers became suspicious when they found bags of "sugar" addressed to a company that had nothing to do with food processing, only to discover cocaine worth millions of euros.

The 114kg of "extremely pure" cocaine were in a container unloaded from a freighter from Panama that docked at the southern port of Gioia Tauro, the customs service said on Saturday.

Destined for the north of Italy, its street value was put at about $26m, a statement said, adding that police anti-mafia units were also involved in the investigation.
