'Suicidal' driver hits police
Brussels - A suicidal driver slammed into a group of bike patrol officers in front of the Belgian royal palace on Tuesday, injuring eight policemen as Qatar's ambassador met the king inside, police said.
The man was detained after the incident, which prosecutors labelled an attempted murder, Belga news agency reported as television images showed a heavily-damaged car near a row of motorbikes at the palace gates.
The officers had just escorted the Qatari ambassador, who was presenting his credentials to King Albert II. Three or four of the officers were seriously injured.
A police spokesperson said the man explained "that he wanted to commit suicide".
Brussels mayor Freddy Thielemans told RTL television: "I can understand that someone wants to commit suicide, but by killing or trying to kill eight people is beyond my understanding."
