Washington - A gunman was killed on Wednesday after a shooting in a movie theatre near Nashville, Tennessee, police said, amid reports he was also wielding a hatchet.

It was not immediately clear if there were any other casualties, but live local television footage showed a huge emergency response effort.

"Active shooter situation @Hickory 8 Theater -- suspect dead," Metro Nashville Police Department said on Twitter, referring to a cinema in Antioch, about 19km outside of Nashville.

The suspect reportedly carried a gun and a hatchet, according to the local Tennessean newspaper, citing Nashville police.

Authorities also said they were examining two backpacks, one the shooter was carrying and one left behind in the theatre, according to the newspaper.

The shooting took place during a screening of Mad Max, and police entered through the projection room before the suspect turned his gun on an officer.

"The officer started at the projection room and started clearing down," said police spokesperson Don Aaron in the Tennessean.

"He encountered the gunman. The gunman opened fire on the South Precinct officer. That officer returned his fire, and then backed away out of the theatre."

The incident takes place less than two weeks after a gunman opened fire in a cinema in Lafayette, Louisiana killing two women and wounding nine others before taking his own life.

Both shootings are reminiscent of the 2012 Batman massacre, when gunman James Holmes opened fire during a showing of The Dark Knight Rises, killing 12 and harming 70 more.
