Suu Kyi party - oath unacceptable
Yangon - The opposition party of Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi says it may not take its recently won seats in parliament because of the wording of the lawmakers' oath of office.
National League for Democracy spokesman Nyan Win said Thursday that a clause saying lawmakers have to protect and safeguard the Constitution contradicts the party's policy. Its platform ahead of the April 1 by-elections called for amending some sections of the constitution that it considers undemocratic.
The party's win of 43 of 44 seats it contested in the polls would give it a minority voice in the military-dominated legislature that convenes April 23. But it's considered a major step toward reconciliation after decades of military rule in Myanmar.
