Damascus - Voting in Syria's presidential vote, being held on Tuesday in regime-held areas, had been extended for five hours, state television said.

"The high electoral committee has decided to extend the election for five hours, because of the massive influx of voters," until midnight (21:00 GMT), it said.

Syrians in regime-held territory turned out for a controversial vote that will almost certainly keep President Bashar Assad in power.

More than 162 000 people have been killed and nearly half the population forced to flee their homes in the three years since a revolt broke out against Assad.
