Syrian defence minister killed in blast

2012-07-18 12:37

Beirut — Syria's state-run TV says the country's defence minister has been killed in a suicide blast in the capital.

Wednesday's attack struck the National Security building in Damascus during a meeting of Cabinet ministers and senior security officials. State-run TV said some of the officials were seriously wounded and later reported the defence minister killed.

The capital has seen four straight days of clashes pitting government troops against rebels, who are trying to bring down the regime by force.

The fighting is an unprecedented challenge to government rule in President Bashar Assad's seat of power.

Damascus will very soon look much like Bhagdad does, a once beautiful society turned into a haven for suicide bombers and mercenaries.

      Assad's demise is coming sooner.

      zaatheist - 2012-07-18 13:45

May be so but the people are trying to overthrow a brutal dictatorship.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-18 13:46

With such powerful deductive skills you should try and get to the bottom of other mysteries such as the loch-ness monster. I on the other hand think that quite a few terrorists are about to be "slaughtered".

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-18 14:18

@zaatheist Which people? It would be nice if Assad retired to Monaco, but he has his supporters, perhaps many. If it's not very clear that almost all want him out, how can he desert his country.

      zaatheist - 2012-07-18 14:30

@Fidel Well he represents a minority ethnic group. Time will tell and a lot more people are going to be killed but the writing is on the wall. I hope he does not get a nice cushy retirement in Iran with his plundered billions but gets dealt with a la Mussolins and Gadaffi. That is what he deserves.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-18 15:14

Wrong, he belongs to a minority group (Alawite) but represents other groups as well, including Sunnis as Syria is a secular country. The Syrian government doesn't seem to be doing anything worse than what the Americans do in Afghanistan and did in Iraq, machine gunning innocents from helicopters, erasing villages (Fallujah) with rockets from drones, special troops running wild murdering at random. Surely morality can't be this flexible?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-18 15:45

And of course the West is to blame. :)

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-18 17:26

Fidel, It would be nice if Assad retired to Monaco, but he has his supporters, perhaps many....... You just DON'T give up. Like a 'good' soldier you will go to the bitter end, even if your concience tells you otherwise. That is a sign of a WEAK person !!!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-18 17:46

You are very predictable, attack my character (again) and the usual 'shame on you for supporting Assad'.......

Charmaine, again, this is a physical universe of time, space and FREE WILL. God does not interfere.

      A typical pro arab comment.

      antin.herinck - 2012-07-18 14:14

Alisha,I see no possibility of a training facility for suicide bombers existing in Langley. And is the method used not typical of the way your brethren do things? But I agree, what's keeping them? The CIA should have done a job on Assad long time ago.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-18 15:47

Hahahahaha! The CIA have become suicide bombers. Talk about being out of touch.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-18 15:48

This is why innocent Muslims are being slaughtered and maimed by the hundreds of thousands. Muslims like Alisha are totally weak and irresponsible.

Yes it is. One of the 1st christian city's. Stayed that way until the islamic occupation 700 odd years later. Saul became Paul on the road between Damascus and Jerusalem

      antin.herinck - 2012-07-18 13:37

That's right. The minister had a Damascus Experience.

      gerhard.kress.3 - 2012-07-18 13:42

Damascus is the oldest city in the world.

  • kooskanmar - 2012-07-18 13:20

President Bashar al-Assad is facing the same end as Gadaffi. He seems to have a short memory. His arrogance is on par with that of Gadaffi. His life expectancy won't be.

  • antin.herinck - 2012-07-18 13:32

No defence against this then. Much as I'm against terrorists, they have my blessing to take out Assad's as well.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-18 13:47

Neither side deserves your support or blessing!

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-18 14:01

Keep up the good work to all syrians involved. Doing a great job so far ! Viva Israel.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-18 14:20

Will Israel give up the Golan Heights to Syria?

  • jeffrey.jones.357 - 2012-07-18 13:56

    Who cares!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-18 14:12

It seems that you do not care about quite a lot of things but you, nevertheless, feel the need to post on/about all these things you don't care about just so you could show everyone how much you don't care.

  • NickvanderLeek - 2012-07-18 15:47

I guess he wasn't very good at defence?
