Washington - Police shot one of the suspected attackers at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, in the US state of Wisconsin, an official said on Sunday.

But the situation was still very "fluid", amid concern that hostages were being held inside by a second possible shooter, the official said in broadcast remarks.

He said the suspect had been put "down" by a police officer and was lying in the parking lot outside the temple after an exchange of gunfire with a police officer.

It was not clear if "down" meant the suspect was dead, and the official did not answer a reporter's request to clarify.

The police officer suffered multiple gunshot wounds, but was being treated in hospital and was expected to survive, the official said.
