Thailand: 1 000+ dogs saved from dinner plates

2011-08-13 12:23

Bangkok - Thai authorities have rescued more than a thousand dogs, which were found stuffed into tiny cages and being smuggled out of the country to be cooked and eaten in Vietnam, officials said on Saturday.

Police intercepted four trucks stacked high with crates packed with the animals in an operation on Thursday evening in Nakhon Phanom province in north-eastern Thailand near the border with Laos.

A Nakhon Phanom livestock development official said 1 011 dogs were being held in a government shelter after two separate raids in Nathom and Si Songkhram districts.

She said an additional 119 had died either through suffocation in the cramped cages or when they were thrown from the back of the trucks as the alleged traffickers sped away from arresting officers.

Two Thai men and a Vietnamese man have been charged with trafficking and the illegal transportation of animals, police case officer Captain Prawat Pholsuwan told AFP.

"The maximum punishment is a one year jail term and a fine of up to 20,000 baht ($670)," he said.

The dogs were transported from nearby Sakon Nakhon province and were destined to be taken across the Mekong river in Laos and into Vietnam, Prawat added.

Traffickers, who round up stray dogs and barter for pets in rural Thai villages, can receive up to $33 per dog in Vietnam, police said.

What's wrong with eating dogs? Pigs are also intelligent and sensitive creatures, possible even more so than dogs, why is there no moral outrage against eating them?

      ChumScrubber - 2011-08-13 13:39

Its not about eating them, its about how they are treated leading up to be eaten. Part of the process is to terrify them before killing them, apparently that makes them taste better. Is that how good humans should treat "lesser" creatures. And industrial pig farming - well, thats another horror story humans have created. Eat them, no problem, but treat them like living creatures that share the planet with us.

      Marcell - 2011-08-13 14:53

      Don't give it a name.

      loveratskzn - 2011-09-21 08:36

As chum says its the way theey are treated. Cows and sheep as dumb as they are are treated better.

      loveratskzn - 2011-09-21 08:42

@ Paul PIgs are not loyal like dogs . Pigs only see people as a food source. Dogs are loyal and serve us in a capacity that other animals do not. They have also served man for generations. You cannot compare the two. Rats are extremelly intelligent and sensative yet are kept in appauling conditions in the pet shops and by snake breeders. I bet Eeven you regard them as vermin and feel that their treatment is justified. You are the kind of person who, as a kid, tied crackers to your cats tail and set them alight.

Most of you talk or think with forked tongue: "treat them humanely but eat them nevertheless." Yes, our carnivorous culture is so entrenched and irreversible that we find this kind of thinking quite normal. This may not be the right place to remind everyone that, in the Bible, God put us in charge of animals but nowhere does he say that we should eat them. But once we've crossed that bridge, I fully agree that ANY kind of meat goes. Perhaps even human flesh? Well, animals, worms and scavengers eat it with relish!- I have to admit that I also was tricked into eating dog meat in Vietnam 2 years ago. What does it taste like? I can't tell you, just like I couldn't explain to you what cherries, or vanilla or chicken tastes like if you've never had it before. But I can tell you one thing: to the European palate it is absolutely revolting and tastes terrible, even if you don't know what you are eating. Whilst the taste of (the other Vietnamese culture of eating) snakes is acceptable and "interesting". It's just that when they come to your restaurant table with a see-through bag holding about 20 writhing snakes, and you have to select one or two of them for subsequent cooking - that you'll always feel a bit queasy and anti.

I live in Cambodia and I really can't see what the big fuss is all about. Come here and see the hunger that the pet loving Americans left here after they screwed up both Vietnam and Cambodia. People are hungry and there are a lot of stray dogs, two birds one stone. I have had dog and while it is not the best tasting meat it has all the nutritional value and fills otherwise empty stomachs, so when did animal compassion over take human compassion? Have you seen how beef and pork and chicken is transported? So let the people eat.

Hi Andre, I am living in Joburg and am thinking of emigrating to Cambodia and would like to talk to you. Pls let me have your email address to win14@telkomsa.net. Tks, Win

Right if people eat dogs and all the other animals, how would a juciy fat 2 year old human taste, just make sure it does not have AIDS, or for your next lot of Biltong a tough rugby player, all muscle and sinue, if you approve of eating the animals of this earth, just remember you are also an animal, and as there is an abundance of human meat going to waste, why not eat it instead of burning or burying it.
