Gaza City - Up to 3 000 people marched through the streets of Gaza City after nightfall on Thursday to mark Yasser Arafat's death, firing into the air, wearing his trademark headdress and carrying his portraits.
Starting from the Park of the Unknown Soldier, the crowd thronged the streets, waving black flags and flanked by hundreds of armed militants from the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, an offshoot of Arafat's Fatah party, an AFP correspondent said.
They were to converge on Arafat's Muntadaa headquarters in the city, where earlier in the day more than 1 000 gathered to mourn Arafat's pre-dawn death in a Paris hospital.
