New York - Time magazine on Wednesday named the recently re-elected US President Barack Obama as its person of the year for 2012 - the second time it has accorded him this honour.
The venerable American news magazine said the United States is in the midst of huge cultural and demographic changes and Obama is both the symbol and in some ways a driving force behind the transformation.
The selection was announced Wednesday on NBC's Today show.
The
short list for the honour included Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani
teenager who was shot in the head for advocating for girls' education.
It also included Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Italian physicist Fabiola Giannati.
Obama also received the honour in 2008, when he was President-elect.
Last year, "The Protester" got the honour.
Time's
"Person of the Year" is the person or thing that has most influenced
the culture and the news during the past year, for good or for ill.
Previous winners have included Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke,
Bono and President George W Bush.
