Sydney - Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott was ousted on Monday after a surprise challenge from his Liberal party's former leader Malcolm Turnbull.

The following are the highlights of Abbott's two years in power.

September 13  2013 - Tony Abbott takes the Liberal party to victory, promising to cut the previous government's taxes on carbon-intensive industry and curb refugee boat arrivals.

November 18 - Revelations that Australia attempted to spy on the Indonesian president's mobile phone put a strain on diplomatic relations.

March 8 2014 - Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappears; Australian maritime authorities end up taking the lead in searching a designated area of the southern Indian Ocean.

March 25 - Abbott brings back the custom of Australia awarding its own knighthoods. Queen Elizabeth's husband Prince Philip is one of the beneficiaries, drawing criticism from republicans.

April l7 - Australia signs free trade deal with Japan.

July 17 - Government cancels carbon tax.

July 18 - Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 shot down over Ukraine with 298 people aboard, including 38 Australians.

September 2 - Abbott repeals tax on Australia's significant but carbon-intense mining industry

December 21 - Cabinet reshuffle after criticism on several fronts, including Abbott's performance at the G20 summit in November.

February 9 2015 - Abbott survives an attempt to oust him as party leader.

June 17 - Australia and China sign free trade deal.

August 2 - Bronwyn Bishop resigns as Parliament Speaker after a scandal over her use of a government-chartered helicopter.

September 14 - Abbott ousted as party leader following a challenge from Turnbull.
