Tijuana - Drug traffickers converted a surfboard into a remote-controlled mini-submarine, in a bid to smuggle $100 000 worth of narcotics from a northwest Mexican border city to the United States, authorities said.

The "strange" 3m long fibreglass board was found near the water on a Tijuana beach by passersby on Wednesday, according to police in the city across the border from San Diego, California.

Officers inspecting the contraption noticed that it had a false bottom and a battery-powered propulsion mechanism made with a metallic tube and a small propeller.

Inside, police found 22 plastic containers with 9kg of synthetic drugs, authorities said.

Authorities believe the makeshift vessel ended up on the beach after going adrift when water seeped inside it.

Drug cartels are finding creative ways to send drugs to the United States, digging tunnels, using drones and even catapulting narcotics over the border.
