Paris - A man suspected of planning a terrorist attack on a Paris-bound train is facing a raft of charges, including terrorism, in relation to the foiled shooting, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office confirmed on Wednesday.

Ayoub el-Khazzani, a 25-year-old Moroccan citizen who resided in Spain for many years, was charged around midnight on Tuesday, the spokesperson said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins opened a judicial investigation into the case. A judicial investigation often precedes formal charges.

Molins said el-Khazzani was being investigated for "attempted murders in relation to a terrorist enterprise", as well as transportation of weapons and involvement in a terrorist criminal association.

Molins said that el-Khazzani, known to Spanish anti-terrorism authorities, had watched a Youtube video on his mobile phone showing an extremist Islamist calling followers to arms once he was already on the Thalys train.

El-Khazzani was tackled by passengers and held until the next station after he was spotted leaving the train toilets with an automatic AKM rifle slung on his shoulder.

Molins said he also had 270 munitions, a Luger pistol, a mobile phone and a bottle containing fuel in his possession.
