Athens - Greece may be forced to hold early elections if the government does not have a parliamentary majority, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Wednesday.

"I would be the last [person] to have a reason to want elections if we had a guaranteed parliamentary majority ... if we do not have a parliamentary majority, we will be forced to go to elections," Tsipras said during an interview on Sto Kokkino radio.

His comments came amid continued divisions within his SYRIZA party, whose central committee is set to meet on Thursday in an attempt to settle differences over whether the government should accept a third bailout from its international creditors.

A second gathering of the party's political secretariat on Tuesday led to a decision to convene the central committee after several officials from the party's Left Platform called for the government not to pursue negotiations with the creditors.

Speaking at a secretariat meeting on Monday, Tsipras had insisted that the government has no other viable option than to agree to a new bailout. He proposed holding an emergency congress at the beginning of September for party members to debate the issue.
