Evacuation order on Thai coast

2012-04-11 12:13

Bangkok - Thailand issued an evacuation order on Wednesday for its Andaman coast, a magnet for foreign tourists, after a massive earthquake off Indonesia triggered a tsunami alert.

Thailand's National Disaster Warning Centre advised people in the area to move to higher places and stay as far away as possible from the sea.

"All people along the Andaman coast must evacuate to safe areas. We expect a tsunami 1.6 to 2.0 metres high to hit Phuket and Phang Nga at 17:40 (10:40 GMT)," the centre's director Somsak Khaosuwan said on Thai television.

The Andaman Coast was battered by an Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 that killed an estimated 5 400 people in Thailand alone.

Since then, Thailand has installed a high-tech warning system designed to reassure tourists and businesses that the country's beaches are safe.

The latest Thai alert, triggered by an 8.7-magnitude quake off Sumatra island, covers six southern Andaman coastal provinces.

Flights to Phuket were diverted to other airports as passengers and staff were evacuated to higher ground, officials said.

The tremor was felt as far afield as Thailand and southern India.

Let's hope the quake didn't cause a tsunami. If it did, then 1.5 to 2 meters is an 'underestimation' for a quake of this magnitude

      Frederic - 2012-04-11 12:34

1.5 to 2 meters is the actual swell, depending on the water-mass it can become easy 5 to 10 meters when it hits shore....

      NrGx - 2012-04-11 12:37

yeah - I also thought that is a very small tsunami in comparison. The last Thailand tsunami was 10m if i remember correctly, with about the same earthquake magnitude 8.7

Remember isnt the land quite flat there? low gradient? so a small wave could travel very far up the shore

I truly hope this doesn't end up in a repeat of 26/12/2004.

It seems as though the nature of the earthquake determines whether a tsunami is generated or not. So I assume a tsunami is not a given.
