Tsunami warning for Indian Ocean region

2012-04-11 11:08

Jakarta - A tsunami warning was issued for the entire Indian Ocean region after a quake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.9 hit waters off westernmost Aceh province in Indonesia.

The US Geological Survey said on Wednesday the quake was centred 33km beneath the ocean floor around 495km from the provincial capital of Banda Aceh.

Said, an official at Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency who goes by only one name, said a tsunami warning has been issued.

Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.

A giant 9.1-magnitude quake off the country on December 26 2004 triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230 000 people, nearly three quarter of them in Aceh.

Let's hope that everyone receives warning to stay away from the beach.

      CharlesDumbwin - 2012-04-11 11:13

Did you see the 2004 disaster? Staying off the beach isn't good enough. They must go to high ground immediately.

      martin.gee.godfrey - 2012-04-11 12:20

Alicia - Why do you only appeal to Christians to pray? Why can't Hindu's, Tamils, Muslims, Gujurati's, Buddists and all the various other religions "pray that this stops right here"? or are their prayers not good enough?

      martin.gee.godfrey - 2012-04-11 13:06

Wow Rudi, are you having a bad day? The other religions I refer to, generally all believe in "God" and most I speak to seem to think there is only one God and that it is just the different ways in which they pray to Him... Personally I don't believe in this Satan and Hell that you fundamentalists all preach about but I respect your right to have those beliefs. This Tsunami and earthquake is an act of nature and perhaps you should have been praying before the event for it not to happen? Makes more sense to me than after the fact!

      Rudi - 2012-04-11 13:30

@ Ferret. And you think those buddists, hindu's and whatever else didn't pray for it to never happen again the previous time? You dont believe in Satan or Hell? See? Satan has pulled the world over your eyes. His greatest accomplishment - make you think he doesn't believe. Having said that, I don't think praying to God would have made the tsunami go away. Who am I to question my Creator's decisions? And yes, I am having a bad day. Thank you for respecting that.

      martin.gee.godfrey - 2012-04-11 14:12

@Rudi - I don't think any wool has been pulled over my eyes. I just fail to see how a "loving God" would condemn those He created to an eternity in damnation. Just doesn't make sense to me. However, this is not the place for a religeous debate and as I said, I respect your beliefs so please respect mine. I just hope that Indonesia is saved the horrors of a yet another natural disaster.

      Randomhero6661 - 2012-04-11 15:44

but then why does GOD allow this magnitude of disaster to happen, oh yes to test ones faith... RUDI seriously religion has pulled a barf bag over your face...

  • Lyndatjie - 2012-04-11 11:20

Please please please... let this not be a repeat of 2004... I hope the tsunami sirens are in place and that the people have been warned...

      Balan - 2012-04-11 14:49

@ Ferret and Rudi, You can pray how you like but thats not going to change GODS plan, only GOD knows how to balance the earth and no religion is better than the other.

      martin.gee.godfrey - 2012-04-11 16:00

@Balan - I didn't say one religion was better than another. I just questionsed why Alicia only implored Christians to pray. And again I say, each to his own when it comes to religion. If you believe it is "Gods Plan" then good for you. I put it down to nature.
