Turkey renews shelling of Syrian targets

2012-10-04 08:28

Ankara - Turkish troops pounded targets in Syria on Thursday morning in reprisal for cross-border fire that killed five Turkish civilians the previous day, a security source said.

"Artillery fire resumed at 0300 GMT this morning," the source said on condition of anonymity.

Several Syrian soldiers have been killed as a result of overnight Turkish shelling across the border, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog said earlier, without giving an exact figure.

Turkey has demanded that the UN Security Council take action against Damascus after Wednesday's attack, which saw mortar fire from Syria kill five Turkish nationals, including a mother and her three children.

It marked the first time that Turkish citizens have been killed as a result of fire from its war-torn neighbour and led to a sharp escalation of tensions between the former allies.

Later on Thursday the Turkish parliament was due to consider a government request to approve cross-border military action.

Before Wednesday, the most serious clash between Syria and Turkey was in June, when Syria shot down a Turkish fighter jet, killing both crewmen.

Instead of involving the poor citizens in their sick geopolitics, why don't the Turkish president and Assad have a boxing match, winner takes all, or maybe we can have a royal rumble like in wrestling. Throw in obama and the turkish president as a team and Assad with the Iranian president. No lives lost, winner takes all. Obama can come with Nato and Assad can have China and Russia as his support.

the path Turkey is taking is going to bring more misery to its people than they think coz all syria need to do is coordinate with the PKK rebels and remember IRAN and Iraq with half of Lebanon is with Assad and at the end of all this when America lose interest Turkey will be paying the bigger price.

Ok then jabu. The Turks should just sit back and let Syria attack them without any response. Very clever huh.Let terror reign.Typical new SAN

Turkey and Nato have been itching for an excuse to declare war against Syria as their rebel puppets haven't been doing too well. Turkey is risking the security and stability of its own citizens for the sole reason that she can be accepted as a member of the EU, an organisation that is struggling to bring economic stability to Europe, and that a lot of European citizen are against.

      customdesign - 2012-10-04 10:46

Turkey is in a good space to bring peace to the region- I don't think it's a fight Assad wants to take one, especially since his army has been decimated. I hope Assad gets taken out quickly so Syria can start rebuilding.

We are looking for the surrender of the syrian army.

If Syria and Turkey get into a full scale war NATO will get involved because Turkey is a NATO member. That is how NATO will get involved thus possibly creating a greater regional conflict that will kill more innocent lives. This is not about saving Syrian people it is about Geopolitics. Even if Assad were to go the first thing that the so called Free Syrian Army or whatever elements in that opposition will do is to persecute those perceived to be Assad supporters. The next thing that will happen is persecution of the minority religions like Christians.

the hands that fired the mortar round on turkey ,were working on orders from israel knowing turkey would respond and as a result the seeds of war have been planted between syria and turkey would begin a full scale war, because the plan and agenda of israel to take over syria in its present war has failed.turkey will pay a high price if war starts peace and respect not war,u.s and israel are behind all wars in the middle east FACT,obummer needs a war to be realected

      richard.bosmano - 2012-10-04 12:06

Typical muslim (and yes shaheen went to an islamic school before i get shouted down) response , blame Israel. The Turks (fellow muslims) are blaming syria (Radar evidence points to syria ,not Israel). We all know muslims are mean't to hate and kill jews,so why woud Turkey allow Israel (allies) to get away with it if they had fired ? Blinded by what you hear in your mosque?

      gerhard.kress.3 - 2012-10-04 12:18

      A typical muslim conspiracy theory.
