Turkish jet 'provoked' Syria: Russia

2012-07-04 14:07

Moscow - A Turkish fighter jet shot down by Syria last month asked for trouble when it entered Syrian airspace, the Interfax news agency quoted an unnamed Russian source as saying on Tuesday.

"The actions of the Turkish plane were no doubt a provocation. Otherwise how would you explain the fact that the fighter jet flew two, albeit short, sorties in the Syrian airspace?"

"The crew had to have only one motive for such actions - to test the combat readiness of the Syrian air defence systems and it indeed tested them. And also to conduct a reconnaissance of the strength and capabilities of the Syrian air defence systems in the coastal direction," it said.

The source quoted by Interfax did not make clear where the information came from.

"In any case, the crew of the Turkish Phantom have tried hard to literally ask for the Syrian air defences' fire," the source was quoted as saying.

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad - whose government is locked in a deadly conflict with the opposition - said this week he regretted that his country's defence forces shot down Turkey's F-4 Phantom jet but insisted the aircraft was in Syrian airspace.

He said the soldier who shot down the aircraft had no radar and could not know to which country the aircraft belonged.

Turkey viewed the loss of its fighter jet as a hostile act and has taken steps to fortify its border with Syria.

It was an unprovoked unwarranted unbridled aggression towards Syria. The Turkish encroachment on Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, was specifically to provoke a confrontation with the Syrian nation. Syria has taught this Nato terrorist a lesson!

Given the information that is available this is a terrible tragedy which the Turks could have avoided, my understanding is that the aircraft was in a corridor known to be used by Israeli fighters, and was mistaken as an Israeli military sortie. Turkey would do well to prove to the international community that its aircraft never at any point in its flight crossed into Syrian airspace, if it did then Turkey will have to accept that it is in fact the aggressor and that the violation of Syrian airspace is in effect a declaration of war. I do not prescribe to the notion that any action against an enemy is acceptable, and firmly believe that every country must accept full responsibility for its actions whether it is an ally or foe.

All these Russians can do , is cause sh.t in the world ! They have NEVER YET, fed one hungry child ANYWHERE in the world. Or created EVEN one job outside Russia. They are a bunch of selfish , useless BASTARDS !!!!!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-04 18:07

I'm detecting a lot of anger here. Maybe you should go and have a little lie down.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-04 18:34

No, not anger, but frustration, of those few living in Africa, who can even utter a good word, about the most useless nation on earth Even the Comores is more important to SA, than Russia is.

      keith.f.murphy - 2012-07-04 18:50

Please dont blame the Russians are you a western vampire supporter???

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-04 19:51

RUSSIA, the most useless nation on earth? Stash the bottle, go to bed, and ask your GP tomorrow to make an appointment with a psychiatrist.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-05 04:08

For radicals Russia is a very important nation, but for other nations, it has not much effect. As a matter of fact, for AFRICA, they mean absolutely NOTHING. It peddles military hardware to whomever is willing to buy their stuff. Ohh yes, and with the purchase they will send you advisers/experts, to get the maximum kill. Where in the world has it had any positive impact? Has it ever put a plate of food on the table, for a hungry person??? === NO Have they ever created one job, outside of Russia ???? ====NO Lesotho has more impact in Africa, than Russia !!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-05 07:22

Anthony, your continued persistance in arguing with a straw man is worrying. Your arguments re Russia are close minded and repetitive in their lack of facts! You seem happy with the deluded scenario you have created to define Russia, any new facts that crop up to disprove your perspective merely becomes an inconvinience that has to be ignored. Given your propensity for incoherent rambling, as evidenced by this post I'm replying to, I'll leave the conversation at that.

Anthony, Western Countries cause more crap (Wars) than Russia - America is the the No. One Weapons peddler in the World with Arms exports odulding that of Russia, Aid provided by the West is not "free" as you would think. The Chinese with all their faults are better than most as they they provide primary and secondary jobs and infrastructure to locals especially here in Africa and they have no hidden agendas like most Western countries and their NGOs

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-05 13:47

While you blind yourself with dumb prejudices, Syrians are being butchered by the Russian-backed unelected dictator who himself has told you he's the bloody surgeon of Syria. .

      Johnnie Walker - 2014-04-02 20:41

And Patrick Edwards, the weapon that killed the most people in history is the AK-47, a Russian assault rifle. Apart from exporting weapons to all the rats of the world, what else did Russia export that is good for mankind?
