Two rockets fired into Israel from Gaza

2011-03-26 18:14

Gaza City - Palestinian militants fired two rockets from Gaza into Israel on Saturday, damaging a house, while an explosion tore apart a factory in the strip, officials said.

There were no injuries reported in either incident but the fire came amid attempts to restore calm to the Gaza Strip border after a spate of rockets attacks and retaliatory air strikes in the past week.

"Two rockets were fired into southern Israel and one landed next to a house," a military spokesperson said.

Israeli media said the one rocket exploded three metres from a house in one of the Israeli communities next to Gaza, damaging the building but not harming the eight family members who were sleeping inside.

Also Saturday an explosion seriously damaged a soft drinks factory in the Zeitun neighbourhood of Gaza city, Palestinian security officials said, blaming an Israeli tank shell.

However, the military said none of its forces were operating in the area at the time.

Visiting the site where the rocket hit, Israeli southern front commander Major General Tal Russo said it appeared Hamas was unable to impose calm on Gaza.

Anarchy in Gaza

"There is currently anarchy on the other side side," the Ynet website quoted him as saying. "Hamas is finding it difficult to turn the clock back."

The effects of "Cast Lead are eroding and the memories on the other side are fading," he said after being asked if Israel would again launch another wide-scale military operation to halt the rocket fire.

"The aim [of Cast Lead] was to allow people to live normal lives and this is not exactly normal," the website quoted him as saying.

He was referring to the three-week Israeli war on Gaza over New Years 2009 in which around 14 00 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed.

On Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel would respond with "great force" against continued rocket attacks. But Defence Minister Ehud Barak, touring the border, said Israel would end its air strikes if the rockets stopped.

Habib and UJ please take note!!! Israel should hunt these terrorists and wipe them out!!

Palestinian militants my foot! They are terrorists firing into civilian targets. If they aimed at military targets, they could be called militants. Come on News24,get your facts right! SHame that this is happening again. Now Israel will blow the heck out of the poor people in the Gaza strip and the whole thing will escalate once again! Isnt it enough already? Hamas, recognise Israel and lets get on with living and stop the killing! Hopefully then Israel will stop retaliating and causing more pain. Its time forthe UN to stop this senseless violence as they stepped into Libya, they can step into Gaza and Israel and put a halt to this once and for all!

  • smurfdogg - 2011-03-26 19:35

This is the main reason why the Palestinians cannot have a state of their own. They have no credible leadership which can guarantee attacks like this from ending. Mike, Israel will never allow UN troops on it's territory. The UN has not proving to be impartial, particularly with incidents on Israel's northern border involving Hizbullah. As for Hamas recognising Israel..that will happen when pigs fly.

      Shukriyya - 2011-03-27 08:36

I have seen a few UN cars around Israel(Haifa,Jerusalem)..so not sure about your above statement that Israel would not allow the UN into the country. This constant rocket fire HAS TO STOP!! Hamas said about 2 months ago that they called a cease fire, and would make sure all their militant factions within Gaza, agreed to the cease fire..YET the rockets kept coming! Any country in the world would force their government to ensure their safety.Israel has every right to defend their civilians. But like you said it will be the poor innocent people in Gaza that suffer at hands of Hamas!!! People in Gaza cannot even hold demonstrations in their own city, calling for unity of the Palestinian people.Just the other day these demonstrators where arrested and some beaten up by Hamas. The people of Gaza need to rise up and change their current oppressive leaders, only they can do this!

Time for Israel to go back into this excuse of a country called Palestine and knock the hell out of Hamas and the rest of the unruly gangs.

Israel is a sovereign state given to the Jewish nation by God / Yaweh / Jehovah. Israel is the only country on earth given a title deed by God Almighty, who is our sovereign Lord Jesus Christ. God said it and that seals it! The real issue here is not just Israel, but primarily Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. God's word says, "And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it." Zec 12:3. So there if you mess with Israel in deed and in word don't expect to not get whacked!

Why waste your time and your breath, people of Israel? Annihilate them, wipe them off the face of the earth and let them be forgotten. Show these terrorists what you are made of, Israelis. Remember the Six Day War, the Yom Kippur War, and many modern conflicts, against much greater odds. Show these Palestinians and the world what you're made of.

      Shukriyya - 2011-03-27 09:12

How can you say that?! There are innocent people living in Gaza that would just love to live their lives in peace too, just as most Israeli's wish for the same. Not All Palestinians are terrorists!! The problem in this region is the religious fanatics on both sides!

      rammstein.f4n - 2011-03-27 11:32

      I'm not religious.

      Shukriyya - 2011-03-28 15:33

I wasn't calling you religious Rammstein.f4n I was just trying to say that the problem in the region is that it's the religious fanatics causing crap on both sides. I am from South Africa, but living in Israel...and it's these religious fanatics causing problems.. I am with you...I don't do organised religion either. all the wars fought through history till the present day are because of religion,it does nothing but separate people. There nothing I hate more than a so called 'holy man' spewing hatred and inciting violence against another religion or people based on what some holy book says.. And I know Palestinians who live just down the road from me in Jaffa/Yafo all wish for the same thing as we all do,coexistence and peace....So I don't agree with lumping all Palestinians as terrorists, there are so many that just want peace in Gaza, and it's unfair that they are being oppressed by Hamas..They can't even demonstrate calling for unity without being beaten up or arrested by Hamas.

Shukriyya, I am aware of the UN presence in Israel. They have a building in Jerusalem on a hill overlooking the old city. King Solomon used to call this the "hill of evil counsel", go figure. There are no UN TROOPS in Israel, under the current situation this would never be allowed.

      Shukriyya - 2011-03-28 15:39

Ahhh okay I get what you are saying..yeah the UN has a presence in this country..But I agree,Israel would never allow UN troops onto it's soil.Which I guess I agree with, seen as the UN is known to be very biased against Israel.
