UAE mulled keeping Hamas hit quiet - WikiLeaks
Dubai - Leaked diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks indicate authorities in the United Arab Emirates debated whether to keep quiet about the killing of a Hamas operative there in January.
The documents also show the UAE requested US help in tracking down cardholder details of credit cards police believe were used by a hit squad involved in the killing.
Dubai officials didn't discuss Mahmoud al-Mabhouh's killing until nine days after his body was discovered in an airport hotel.
Israeli spies are widely believed to be behind the killing.
The cables don't shed new light on the killers' identities, but the US ambassador notes in one that for the Emiratis to say nothing "would have been perceived as protecting the Israelis".
