London - British police say they have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of manslaughter after a suspected gas explosion destroyed a house and killed a child.

Greater Manchester Police said the suspect was detained on Wednesday "following the death of a 2-year-old boy in an explosion in Oldham".

Tuesday's explosion in the town 260km northwest of London reduced a row house to rubble and damaged others beyond repair.

Toddler Jamie Heaton was killed, and a 27-year-old man is hospitalised with severe burns.

Residents had reported a smell of gas, but the utility company found no leaking pipes and police said they were treating the incident as suspicious.

Police did not release the suspect's name. Criminal suspects in Britain are usually not identified until they are charged.
