UK riots 'scooter looter' jailed

2011-12-22 14:38
London - A British court on Wednesday sentenced a rioter who was caught on video pulling a man off his scooter during the summer riots to almost six years in jail.

The footage of Ryan Kitchenside, 18, chasing his victim before yanking him to the ground during the August riots in Croydon, south London, appeared on video-sharing website YouTube, leading to his eventual identification.

The victim, who suffered a fractured ankle, was held down by rioters as another drove away on the scooter, but only after first crashing it.

Judge Peter Grobel handed out the five-year-and-10-month sentence after Kitchenside admitted to stealing the Aprilla scooter and £1 700 in cash and documents contained in its pannier on August 8.

Kitchenside also admitted to violent disorder and the looting of two shops.

Prosecutor Graham Lloyd told the court that the victim, a surveyor in his 40s, was still hampered by injuries sustained in the attack.

"He resisted and tried to drive off on his scooter. He managed to drive about 10 yards when he was pulled to the ground," explained Lloyd.

"His left ankle was crushed under the scooter, his foot was fractured. He is still suffering problems with that broken foot."

Some four months on from the country's worst unrest for a generation, police are still hunting for those involved in the violence which erupted in London on August 6 and spread to other English cities.

Gangs of masked youths burnt and looted city neighbourhoods, leaving five people dead.
