UN: Israel and Palestinians still far apart

2011-09-27 22:31

New York - The UN political chief says Israel and the Palestinians remain far apart on reaching a peace accord but insists "now is time for everyone to give diplomacy a chance".

B Lynn Pascoe says "the passions of last week" - when Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas urged leaders to support his bid for UN membership and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposed it without a negotiated settlement - demonstrates the divide.

But he told the Security Council at its monthly Mideast briefing on Tuesday that there are now building blocks in place that could help negotiations.

Pascoe said these include a timetable by the Quartet of Mideast mediators - the UN, US, EU and Russia - calling for negotiations to resume in a month, and a final settlement by the end of 2012.

Israel just gave the go ahead for 1400 homes on Palestinian east jerusalem. they don't want peace, group areas all over again.

      Met - 2011-09-28 06:11

Not sure what you are saying. I expect Mohammeds followers to be here in force, soon. They were conspicuous in their absence at the report of a Saudi woman being sentenced to 10 lashes for driving a car- good sharia law, they would claim, no doubt.

      tictoctictoc - 2011-09-28 06:39

Met, you have to remember that Saudi Arabia and Israel are the USA's best friends in the Mideast. Go figure that! Both regimes are equally intransigent. Both should be isolated by the international community, the same way apartheid SAfrica was isolated!

      Observer - 2011-09-28 08:38

@ Granadilla - last I saw it's actually 1100 homes. Prone to exaggeration much? If you can't keep numbers accurate when the report is right there for you to see the numbers, how can I trust anything else you comment about?

      Met - 2011-09-28 08:43

tictoc booom! No doubt then that you are an admirer of Mohamedinejad and his band of fools in Iran.Saudi plays a game of pretence, perhaps self preservation. Saudi produces some of the most radical Islamic terrorists in the world. The Bin-Ladens and remember, the majority of the 9/11 lot were Saudis. King Faoed is also the sponsor of the most radical mosques in the USA, I am surprized the US permits it, but look the other way for obvious reasons.Jekyl and Hyde- thats Saudi Arabia. God bless Israel and its people- may He protect them against the arab/islamic terrorists.

      tictoctictoc - 2011-09-28 08:57

@Met - I'm confused - WTF is King Faoed? Your incoherent ramblings tells me you either have a moerse hangover or haven't taken your prozac yet! Israel and Saudi Arabia are the 2 closest US allies in the Mideast! Both are basket cases and both should be given pariah status by the international community!

      Met - 2011-09-28 10:59

Tictoc Boooooooooom- hope it works now. He is the King of Saudi. Its a relationship of convenience. You clearly do not know what you are talking about.International community? Talking of the African and Arab dictatorships- Only noise and hot air, as your outburst clearly shows

      Sharief - 2011-09-28 11:02

Granadilla-we will always defend Islam,as this is what JIHAD truly means,to fight for our faith, not killing inncocent people or commiting sudicide like the west tells u...1100 homes does not mean anything,at the end of the day there will never be peace agreement between Israel and Palestine, this issue will carry on untill the very end-ALLAH U AKBAR!(GOD IS GREAT)

      Moon God - 2011-09-28 11:38

@Sharief "not killing innocent people" - Oh really? Not the idea that I got when I read this article: The enemies of Islaam and the ignorant people that follow them are trying to portray the reality of the struggle against the Jews as a struggle for land and borders, and as a problem of refugees and water ports. And they make it seem as if it is possible to end this struggle with peaceful coexistence and by compensating the refugees, rectifying their condition of living, dispersing them throughout the land and establishing a weak petty secular state, which will live under the Zionist power and which will serve as a shield for the Zionist state (against their surrounding enemies). But all of these people don’t realize that our struggle with the Jews goes way back, ever since the first Islamic state was established in Madeenah with Muhammad (SAWS) the Messenger sent to all of mankind, as its leader. Allaah has related to us in the Qur'ân, the reality of the Jews’ malice and hatred for the ummah of Islaam and Tawheed, as he says: “You will surely find that the people with the most enmity towards the believers are the Jews and the polytheists.” [Surah Al-Maa’idah: 82]

How can Israel negotiate with terrorists, that vow to wipe them off the face of the earth?

      Really - 2011-09-28 07:53

They just have to look at SA to see what happen when you negotiate with terrorists.

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-09-28 08:27

Who's definition of a terrorist are you using, if you go by the US and Israeli definition then both the US and Israel is also terrorist states. Until five years ago Madiba had to get special permission to enter the US. The two year old son of a respected scholar is listed as a terrorist since his father spoke out against US hypocrisy.

      Met - 2011-09-28 08:45

Abdud- when they sentance a woman to 10 lashes for driving a car- sharia law

      Sharief - 2011-09-28 11:08

U right...there will never be peace between Israel and Palestine, but i tell u this,Palestine will be victoriuos

      Met - 2011-09-28 11:15

Mohammeds( the guy who had a 9 yr old "wife") followers are here in force , sandals, robes and all, as I predicted. Any opinion on the 10 lashes for a woman who drove a car in Saudi?

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-09-28 13:55

@Met The Saud family of Saudi Arabia does not represent the majority of people in that country it is a family dictatorship that is abhored by most muslims but adored by the west. The Arab Spring will come to Saudi Arabia to and what will the west have to say about that

  • slg - 2011-09-28 02:14

They're closer to each other than either currently realize.

  • Larry - 2011-09-28 06:33

All of Jerusalem belongs to Israel by annexation. Arab Israelis may build homes in Israel and Jewish Palestinians in the West Bank may build homes in their areas of the Palestinian territory. The Palestinians do not want Jewish neighbors - how racist is that?

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-09-28 08:08

@Larry “The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.” - Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949. This has been confirmed by 67 UN security council resolutions against Israel that no state including US vetoed. Israel is a signatory to that convention and is the only state that has ignored 67 UN security council resolutions and the Geneva convention since any attempt to force Israel to abide by it is prevented by the US

      Sharief - 2011-09-28 11:10

Do your homework Larry,do ur homework...

  • letsee - 2011-09-28 07:16

Without "war", billions in donations stop flowing to Israel and Palestinians. No wonder some people want the "war" staus to continue.

  • tictoctictoc - 2011-09-28 07:18

Israeli Jews should return to Europe and Russia where they came from or live in harmony with their Arab cousins in Palestine under Palestinian rule! The same as people of European descent in Africa! Its that simple!

      Really - 2011-09-28 07:51

Perhaps the Palestinians should just go back to Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. I'm still waiting for an answer to my question: How many Palestinians were born in Jerusalem, ever?

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-09-28 08:21

@Really I suggest you read this article and from that you can get an idea of how many people was born their - Jerusalem is part of the West Bank. Wikipedia discussing Arab Israelis says that of the 950 000 that lived there 80% fled leaving 156 000 when Israel occupied Jerusalem. So please do your homework before making comments

      tictoctictoc - 2011-09-28 08:37

@Really - Hendrik Verwoerd, the architect of apartheid used your exact argument to justify the creation of the Bantustans. Israel = Apartheid SAfrica! Israel should be isolated the way apartheid SAfrica was isolated.

      Observer - 2011-09-28 08:40

@tictoctictoc - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Oh to live in your simple world...your grasp of the situation is frightingly simple.

      Met - 2011-09-28 08:50

Really- you are absolutely correct. The neighbouring states where the palestinians come from, could resolve the issue overnight- if they wanted to. But they insist that Israel, the smallest country, give up its land. But, of course we all know that there are dark and evil motives behind this.

      Sharief - 2011-09-28 11:13

      @ Really,,,really now???

  • Messenger - 2011-09-28 09:41

Way back on March 31, 1977, the Dutch newspaper Trouw published an interview with Palestine Liberation Organization executive committee member Zahir Muhsein. Here's what he said: The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct "Palestinian people" to oppose Zionism. For tactical reasons, Jordan, which is a sovereign state with defined borders, cannot raise claims to Haifa and Jaffa, while as a Palestinian, I can undoubtedly demand Haifa, Jaffa, Beer-Sheva and Jerusalem. However, the moment we reclaim our right to all of Palestine, we will not wait even a minute to unite Palestine and Jordan.

  • Messenger - 2011-09-28 09:42

On the same day Arafat signed the Declaration of Principles on the White House lawn in 1993, he explained his actions on Jordan TV. Here's what he said: "Since we cannot defeat Israel in war, we do this in stages. We take any and every territory that we can of Palestine, and establish a sovereignty there, and we use it as a springboard to take more. When the time comes, we can get the Arab nations to join us for the final blow against Israel."

      tictoctictoc - 2011-09-28 10:03

Jewish settlers from Russia and Eastern Europe arrived in Palestine to usurp land belonging to Palestinian people. We cannot turn back the clock - it would be like expecting the Afrikaners to go back to Holland, France etc. Besides Eastern European countries and Russia don't want them back any more than Holland or Europe will take the Afrikaners back! So what now! A couple of options - those Israelis who cover their asses with dual citizenship (a couple of hundred thousand have US passports) can go to the promised land in Orlando, Florida. Those who want to stay in Palestine are welcome to live in harmony with their Arab cousins under Palestinian rule and/or they can create a little Orania type enclave where they can live under the auspices and protection of the Arab Republic of Palestine! The Quartet and Teflon Tony should consider my proposal - they can have it for free!

  • Badballie - 2011-09-28 10:31

@REALLY your knowledge of history astounds, More Palestinians were born in Jerusalem than Jews. Jerusalem was not founded by built by the Jewish race it was originally a Canaanite(nearest accurate translation Palestinian)village called salom which was turned into the city of Jerusalem by the then Canaanite King, 3800 years before Christ the first temple was also built during that time. The taking of Jerusalem by the Hebrew (NOTE: HEBREW NOT JEW)was as a result of military conquest at a later date. The Jewish Israel community is made up exclusively by European Jewish descendants who never had a claim to Israel or Jerusalem. The original Hebrew of Jewish descent (Gods chosen people) is not now in Israel, and European Jews in Israel are in effect claiming a city they have never owned or had any right to. Please check history and stop buying into the bullsh*t being propagated by Jewish money

  • j4truth - 2011-09-28 12:00

'palestinians' were only called such since 1966! By world agreement in 1917 the Jews were given permission to move back to a BARREN and UNINHABITED land which the Romans called Palestine, but IS THE ANCIENT BIBLE LANDS OF THE JEWS! The now so called 'pallestinians' are just SQUATTERS and should move to Jordan which was created for them by the British. The whole of Israel for all the Jews. Viva Israel!! Build houses on your sovereign land for your people. Do not be intimidated by the spirit of Hitler in so much of the world today - The true God Jehovah Elohim strengthen and protect you Israel.

      tictoctictoc - 2011-09-28 12:54

j4truth - you make me Lol with your revision of history. Here's the true history. Those Jewish immigrants from Russia and Europe who fled christian persecution in the 19th and 20th centuries came to Palestine and found Palestinians living there. They dispossessed the land from the rightful Palestinian owners via trickey and spurious means, much the same way settlers from Europe stole land from blacks in esrstwhile Rhodesia, apartheid SAfrica and elsewhere in the world. Since I'm solution oriented and since the clock cannot be turned back I've offered a magnanimous solution, namely, the Jews can remain as long as they accept Palestinian rule and as long as they abide by the rules of the Arab Republic of Palestine and as long as they live side by side in harmony with their Arab cousins. Those who want to go to the promised land can immigrate to Orlando, Florida and those who want an Orania equivalent somewhere in Palestine can have that also, as they as they abide by Palestinian rules! Finish and klaar!
