UN approves up to 300 Syria monitors

2012-04-21 19:01

New York - The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Saturday that authorises an initial deployment of up to 300 unarmed military observers to Syria for three months to monitor a fragile week-old ceasefire in a 13-month old conflict.

The Russia-European drafted resolution said that deployment of UN observer mission, which will be called UNSMIS, will be "subject to assessment by the Secretary-General [Ban Ki-moon] of relevant developments on the ground, including the cessation of violence."

The council's resolution also noted that the cessation of violence by the government and opposition is "clearly incomplete".

What's the point when Russia is selling arms to Assad. The world and the overwhelming majority of Syrians are being held hostage by an old-world mafia-like regime. Assad is relishing the opportunity to impose his rule. This is what would have happened in Libya. Had Gaddafi been given more opportunity, as Assad is being given, Libya would be in far, far worse shape. It's deeply disappointing that the world still needs to see the outcome of these failed policies, especially the Muslim world.

At the end of the day, Assad won't succeed and Syria will be in ruins. The only positive: strengthened world resolve and greater clarity when it comes to Iran, which is next.

Because USA intervention has certainly proved to be winning policy hasn't it?

Dylan, you hold the perspective that the US is the source of all evil in the world and attacked itself on 9/11. With this kind of prejudice and delusion, there's little chance you'll arrive at the right perspective. In fact, you'll land up supporting the real negative forces in our world.
