New York - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on Saturday for the immediate restoration of calm and dialogue to resolve the escalating crisis in Ukraine.

The UN chief will speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin by telephone shortly to discuss the situation, his spokesperson Martin Nesirky told reporters.

"He calls for an immediate restoration of calm and direct dialogue between all concerned to solve the current crisis," Nesirky said.
