UN sends expired biscuits to besieged Syrians

2015-10-24 18:13

Beirut - The United Nations on Saturday admitted that it had sent hundred of boxes of out-of-date biscuits to a besieged Syrian town near the Lebanese border.

"The United Nations was regretfully informed that 320 out of 650 boxes of high-energy biscuits sent to Zabadani and Madaya as part of a relief convoy on October 18 had expired in September 2015," said Yacoub El Hillo, the UN resident and humanitarian coordinator in Syria.

"We can confirm that this was the result of an unfortunate human error during the loading process," El Hillo said.

"To be on the safe side ... we have asked the communities to isolate the expired biscuits and we are taking all possible steps to replace the consignment as soon as possible," El Hillo added.

In September a UN-sponsored agreement was reached to relieve the sieges of rebel-held Zabadani and two Shiite villages held by government forces in the north-west of the war-town country.

Zabadani has been under attack by regime forces and their allies since July.

The town is one of the Syrian opposition's last strongholds near the Lebanese border, lying about 12 kilometres from the Jdeida border crossing on the Damascus-Beirut highway.

The government offensive prompted Sunni Islamist rebels to retaliate by shelling and besieging two Shiite villages, Foua and Kafraya, in Idlib province.
