UN slams Myanmar

Geneva - The UN labour agency has criticised Myanmar for failing to abolish forced labour.

The International Labour Organisation says it is "deeply concerned" that the southeast Asian country continues to imprison people who have complained about forced labour.

Geneva-based ILO said on Friday it has adopted a resolution calling on Myanmar to immediately release those prisoners.

ILO says its latest resolution also expresses concern about forced labour being used in infrastructure projects such as building oil and gas pipelines.

Myanmar says it is making efforts to eliminate forced labour and recognises the right of its citizens to make complaints on the subject without fear of punishment.

ILO has accused Myanmar of using forced labour since 1998.
