US: Abbas statehood move at UN unwise

2011-09-21 21:43

Washington - The US ambassador to the United Nations on Wednesday called the Palestinian push for recognition by the world body "an unwise and diversionary gambit".

"There is no shortcut to statehood," said Susan Rice, who added that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas should back away from his push for recognition by the UN.

Rice acknowledged in an interview on CBS' The Early Show that the US believes Abbas will proceed with his plan, nevertheless.

But in an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America on Wednesday, the ambassador said the statehood effort "won't succeed" at the Security Council because Abbas would need "nine affirmative votes and no vetoes."

Rice said that Israel and the Palestinians must resolve the problem at the bargaining table, arguing that lingering differences exist between the two sides over security, borders, the capital city and the Palestinian refugees.

And she said the Obama administration is concerned about a "great gap between the expectations of the Palestinian people and the reality" of the situation.

I wonder when Palestinians will ever be free, Jews were rescued from Hilter!!!

      Moon God - 2011-09-22 09:54

Well, ask Hamas that question, or maybe ask the Palestinians themselves.

      BABaracus - 2011-09-22 10:31

Why do you say the Palestinians are not free? They live in areas over which Hamas on one side and Fatah on the other have sovereign control. Everything is run by the Palestinians, including border posts, schools, courts, municipal services, everything. The Israeli Defense Force is not present in the Palestinian areas. The only thing that they are fighting about is the borders of Israel. Hamas wants the total destruction of Israel and refuses to recognize it. Fatah refuses to recognize Israel but will probably accept Israel if it gives up Jerusalem, goes back to its pre-1967 border, and allows all Palestinians the right to live in Israel, including the vast majority who were never born in the pre-1967 borders of Israel, which will of course mean the end of the Jewish state anyway. So what is this talk of freedom? Freedom from what? It's all just ignorance and prejudice and hypocricy. It makes me sick.

the US should stop its hypocrisy! It is bias and like the Israelis, do not want to see the palestinians free. They have a right like other nations to have their own country and be in control of their own affairs. Its a disgrace how these people are being treated by the so-called democratic West

      Really - 2011-09-22 01:49

They should just go back to Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. That is where they came from in the first place. I'm still waiting on an answer for this question: how many Palestinians were born in Jerusalem?

      Really - 2011-09-22 01:52

One more thing. According to your thinking you would then support a country for Afrikaners in SA where they can in control of their own affairs?

      Moon God - 2011-09-22 09:58

And what about the Kurds? Don't they also have the right to their country?

      BABaracus - 2011-09-22 10:34

The real hypocricy is how people hate and accuse Israel and the US but ignore countries like Syria, Iran, China, Russia, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, etc etc etc.

I am a Christian but even Jesus said pay Ceasar his taxes and pay what belong to the Church. The wertern powers keep on saying to the middle east you need to move to Secular states. Dont mix Goverment and Religion but still I need to hear that the land of the Jews were given to them by God. Jerusalem belong to a lot of religions. So what. Does all the Catholics in the world own the Vatican? No US President ever came up with a workable plan for this crisis. Why? The Jewish community paid for their election campains. And lets be honest: There is no bloody oil in Palestine. We ask why the Muslems hate us and why they are killing us using suicide Bombers. I will tell you why its the second best to fighter jets. Muslems,Christians - Catholic,Protestants, Orthodox and all the other charismatic churches need to remember one thing: We all believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Wakeup before its to late!

I'm pretty sure it would be a bad idea to invest in the dollar the day they veto this. It will be the clearest indication yet that they never intend to let them live free. They veto-ed when a NATO military officer begged the UN to intervene in Rwanda before the genocide was in full effect. That man killed himself because he wasn't able to live with what he saw. This will be on a whole new scale. And will mark the end of middle-east collaboration with the US. I just hope when the bombs go off it will be under the politicians beds and not near innocents. Plus I think this bid is the smartest thing the Palestinians have done in a while. They might just win this round and once they're a recognised country the UN will have to enforce it proclamations on Israel. The same proclamations they've been ignoring for over 3 decades.

  • Zee - 2011-09-22 10:27

Umm, they tried the bargaining table and Israel refused to stop settlement building on future Palestinian land in accordance with the latest UN resolution. These people are attempting a peaceful way of getting through this issue but the US is not allowing it to happen! You're just creating more extrmism, and it's going to bite you in the bum one day!

      BABaracus - 2011-09-22 10:50

Zee it is true that Israel refused to stop building within already existing Israeli settlements. It is also true that Hamas and Fatah refused and continue to refuse to stop attacks on Israeli civilians and to recognize the state of Israel. There is such a long, long history of negotiated settlement offers being made by Israel and repudiated or rejected by the Palestinians, but I think the bottom line is that both sides have to negotiate, which is what Israel's position is. But what the Palestinians want to do is simply continue to refuse to recognize the state of Israel, continue to attack Israel, but also demand recognition from the UN. There is nothing peaceful about the Palestinians. Both sides need to compromise, but this one-sided approach against Israel is not balanced, fair or constructive.

When will the man n the street wake up to the fact that the US is nothing but an elitist mouth piece for the Jewish money that effectively owns the US. American concern have nothing to do with the people of Palestine a everything to do with control. American is guilty of far worse crimes than the Nazi party ever committed and is still looked to as the savior of the free world when they are in fact the enemies of anyone who holds the true meaning of Democracy dear. Hopefully the lemmings will wake up before they get to the cliff.

      BABaracus - 2011-09-22 11:42

Badballie don't you think you should rather stick to the white supremist websites you clearly obtain all your views from? Or maybe you should ssve your criticsm for Syria, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, China, Russia, Venezuala and other countries where there are real human rights atrocities and abuses? Your hyporcisy, racism and hatred of Jews and Americians stinks. You are a confused, sad individual.
