US church says no to black couple

2012-07-29 08:39

Washington - A Mississippi couple got the shock of their lives when the pastor at the church they attended told them the wedding they planned could not be held there because they are black, ABC television reported on Saturday.

Pastor Stan Weatherford told the network there had never been a wedding for blacks at the First Baptist Church in Crystal Springs, Mississippi, since it was opened in 1883.

He said some of the white congregatrion so virulently opposed the wedding of Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson, who are black, that they threatened to have him fired.

Weatherford, a pastor who is white, offered to wed the Wilsons down the road at a mostly black church, he told the network.

"My 9-year-old was going to the church with us. How would you say to your 9-year-old daughter, 'We cannot get married here because, guess what sweetie, we're black,'" Charles Wilson told ABC's affiliate WAPT-TV.

The would-be groom told WAPT that the couple intended to join the church as members after their wedding, which was planned for 20 July. Until they got the bad news that forced them to move their ceremony to another church where it was held on 21 July.

Locals voiced shock at the pastor's move.

"That church was their home," said local resident Theresa Norwood, 48. "What would Jesus have done? He would have married them, without a doubt, because it's the right thing to do. We're all God's children," she said.

Difference between the US and SA - if the same happened here, the church would've been burned down, the pastor and his congregation pelted with stones, and songs of machine guns and bullets would've been sung. Racism is everywhere

      diran.pillay - 2012-07-29 09:19

You think they only burn, murder and rape in our country? America is dangerous with there own murderers, racist and rapist

      pierre.devilliers.9231 - 2012-07-29 09:59

@Tiaan - if what you said is true then very few churches in SA would still be standing...I agree with you on one thing, racism is everywhere, but that does not make it right, it does not mean everybody support it and it does not mean nothing should be done about it.

      jewel.moyana - 2012-07-29 10:04

In kempton park ,joburg is a church that politely turns away black people ! Still waiting to see crowds singing songs of machine guns and stoning the pastor.

      wesleywt - 2012-07-29 10:10

Holy crap. How did Tiaan turn this into racism against whites. This guy must seriously move to Canada. We don't need scum like this here.

      jack.oosthuysen - 2012-07-29 10:56

Once again fodder for the atheists and non believers.

      juicecard.tshaka - 2012-07-29 10:59

Serves him right! Why abandon his folks just across the road?

      goyougoodthing - 2012-07-29 11:11

Firstly I shows how racist the USA is and secondly, if it happened in reverse here, the couple, who would then be white, would be told to 'go home to Europe'... maybe they should 'go home to Africa'... No I don't condone nor mean that, I am just highlighting the difference.

      pisciotta - 2012-07-29 15:34

Tiaan - I must admit this news shocked me. I grew up during segregation, I was somewhat persecuted for being a Jew, but not as bad as being a Black. Still I thought this sort of behavior was over. Americans are now targeting illegal Mexicans for the most part - that is in the southwest. This happened in the "deep-south" where Blacks still "mind their place" as it where. Had it been NYC or Chicago, I would suspect there would be protests. Not guns, but a hell of alot of protests with Jesse Jackson in a wheel-chair leading the march. The church has since pubically issued as statement that they do not discriminate. Seems it was a small minority of the congregation that opposed this marriage. The couple had attended the church, but were not yet members. Doubt they will be. But they would be welcomed in my Synagogue - even as Christians.

      siyanda.msoki.5 - 2012-07-29 16:19

we not burning down the church but the symbol of racism

      james.rossouw - 2012-07-29 17:32

Hey Riaan "Racists" they are the people that claim Germany,UK,Denmark Sweden are superior to Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia. Africa has already infected Italy {South} Spain, Portugal.

      arthur.hugh - 2012-07-29 23:25

I have to laugh at religion at this point. Oh wait, I always do... hahaha!

      thurlo.cicero - 2012-07-31 08:56

So Tiaan its ok to make money out of the greater South African population but when it comes to people - is that what you see? Interesting. And this is why we have problems in SA. Tiaan is the MD of SHARE: SHARE is the acronym for Social Health And REsponsibility. The vision and mission of SHARE transcends culture, race, ethnicity, religion, and gender, and is rooted in community activism.

      nadineelvina.francis - 2012-07-31 10:48

God is for all races , moron - If this happened in SA and the church was burned to the ground - I would have helped them burn it. This couple should take this issue to the White house and have that miserable paster removed. Cannot believe the people that gave you a thumbs up for your racist comment.

Religion.... the reason why apartheid was "justified" and perpetuated in our country. But if you really look at it fairly - its not religion that is the root of all evil - but people who taint the interpretation with their own prejudices.

      neil.nkuna - 2012-07-29 13:02

Its hard 2 get a job as a white person in SA, its even harder as a black person. You have it nice and you still complain.

      dewaldmontgomery - 2012-07-29 15:33

It's not our fault. Blame your government which doesn't foster a pro-business climate in our country. It's mos counter revolutionary. Bla bla the DA is pro-business... The DA is pro-capitalist... Bla bla. No, being pro-business creates opportunities for enterpreneurs to start and grow businesses, to employ and empower people. And there are only so many white people. At some stage black people will by definition also benefit regardless of the skin colour of the founder of the business or the manager or whoever. Instead, we use BEE and AA to force sharing, instead of CREATING MORE. Let's see the sharing once the cow has been milked DRY. Secondly, control population growth, and you'll eventually make sure everyone gets a job, has real opportunities, and more. There's more about JOBS than WHITE or BLACK. Stop complaining. Vote in a government that can bring change not through ideology but through real good governance. That will get you at least 50% there. Stop complaining and have a good Sunday.

      merven.halo - 2012-07-30 13:09

That is bull neil, you've got AA and BEE and black scholarships for your ilk.

  • teddy.beer.319 - 2012-07-29 09:25

As a christian I am sad to hear this! I am surprised that no one has criticized christianity yet! (-: This guy should not be a pastor if he cannot stand up again racism in his church! It is better to loose your job by standing up for the truth then keeping your job and moving further away from the truth"Jesus". Sadly this is a bad reflection on christianity! I hope this couple will find a better church, a church focused on Christ!

      Lennon Chenga - 2012-07-29 10:29

Dirk, the reason why people have not commented on Christianity is coz this pastor does not represent religion!! You will just attract non believers to start attacking religion.

      dirk.cordier.1 - 2012-07-29 10:23

Wonderful if you believe that, but don't look at a bad church that has no desire to follow Jesus, and forget to look at another church down the road that serves and loves the community! People has sadly done the craziest things in Christs name. That is why it is vital to live close to Jesus and therefor hearing him and following his ways and not our own views! The church is the people. People makes up the church. And man is made of God so you almost right buddy.

  • Deirdre1938 - 2012-07-29 10:05

This incident has nothing to do with religion. It is about who pays the piper. The"rats" are the congregation of this church who pay the Pastor to run the church, therefore they have the "right" to say who can be married in this church.Obviously this Pastor has not been able to teach the Christian way to his congregation. On this I think he should be fired.

or a secound I thought white south africans were the only race who regarded themselves as better human beings and it terns out that I was wrong.they think they are god or maybe they are, that's why they came with only a bible that they wrote in SA to teach us about themselves and how we should worship them. When they came to SA they had a bible and we had the land and at the end of the day they had the land and we had the bible, all the people in the bible are white but they say we were made from the same image, there is no god for the black man \black man you are on your own\(steven biko) I'm confused and angry at the same time.

      louis.nolte.3 - 2012-07-29 11:10

This is a US issue, why are you making it a South African thing again? Oh and the Bible does not come from whites in Europe - get your facts straight. \r\n\r\nI wonder if any of us that go to church would agree with what happened in the US - I certainly don't and I can guarantee you that none of my white friends do. But seeing that you want to make it a South African issue, maybe you should do and read what Nelson Mandela envisioned for South Africa and how it has become exactly the opposite with all of the exclusion policies that your government has introduced to oppress the minorities in this country.\r\n\r\nThere we go, now we're completely off the topic of this article like you wanted.

      pisciotta - 2012-07-29 17:21

Storm: The Caucasoid (white)race includes Aryan, Semitic (Jesus and me)and Hamitic. As for Christinity the word itself derives from Greek. The religion first had its collective founding under Constintine. Up until Constintine's control it was a disjointed group of many ideas mostly Gentile and incorporated much of the Greek and Roman mythology that had come into the region. There was however a small sect of Jewish followers who didn't buy into diety of Jesus, virgin birth, abandonment of Torah, and the teachings of Paul. That group was called the Ebionites. The name is from the Hebrew word for poor: ???????. They were wiped out by the Gentile Christians. Politically Jews were free from the worship of Caesar as a diety. When Gentiles started to believe Jesus was their Messiah they believed somehow they were part of Israel. They then clammored for freedom against the forced worship of Caesar. That caused a scare and serious division between Jews and Gentiles. Jews didn't want to loose their right to worship only one diety. The rest is history. But bottom line, Christianity is a Gentile religion formulated under the leadership of Rome. Later breaking off into a multitude of diverse factions. Facinating study if you are interested and unbiased when doing the study.
