Cape Town - A US hitchhiker who became an instant internet star after he gave an animated interview describing how he incapacitated a deranged man with a hatchet has been arrested for allegedly beating a man to death in a separate incident, reports said on Friday.

The Huffington Post reported that "Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker", real name Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, was arrested on Friday at a Philadelphia bus station for the murder of  New Jersey lawyer Joseph Galfy jnr.

The report said Galfy, aged 73, was found dead from blunt force trauma in his house on Monday. He was wearing only his socks and underwear.

McGillvary shot to internet fame, and has since amassed a cult following, after he saved a man from being hit by a car being driven by a man on a rampage in Fresno, California in February this year.

He hit the man three times in the back of the head with a hatchet. He had been hitching a ride with the man who was subsequently arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Describing the incident at the time to a local reporter McGillvary said, "I f-ing ran up behind him with a hatchet. Smash! Smash! S-mash!

While authorities say the motive for the New Jersey lawyer's murder is still unknown, reports say a Facebook message posted by McGillvary to his page a day after the murder could provide a hint.

"what would you do if you woke up with a groggy head, metallic taste in your mouth, in a stranger's house.... walked to the mirror and seen come [sic] dripping from the side of your face from your mouth, and started wretching realizing [sic] that someone had drugged, raped and blown their fuckin load in you? What would you do?"

In response to that post, one of McGillvary's Facebook friends suggested hitting that person with a hatchet, The Huffington Post reported.

"I like your idea," said McGillvary.

WABC-TV's Eyewitness News reported that McGillvary had spent the weekend preceding the murder at Galfy's house. The two had met in New York's Time Square on Saturday, reports say.
