US man admits trying to open jet door mid-flight

2011-12-10 10:00

St Louis - A US man who tried to open a passenger jet door in mid-flight could face up to 20 years in prison.

Reynel Alcaide of Illinois pleaded guilty on Friday in federal court to interference with flight crew members and attendants.

Alcaide was on a Continental Airlines flight travelling from Houston to Chicago on May 8 when he repeatedly tried to open an exit door when the plane was in the air.

Passengers and crew members eventually subdued him, and the flight was diverted to St Louis.

A prosecutor says Alcaide told interviewers he was having marital problems and that he had tried to commit suicide before.

Sentencing is March 8.

Selfish bugger! If you want to commit suicide that's fine but don't take other innocent people with you.
