Tehran - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday extended his sympathies to the families of the victims of the shooting that killed 20 children at an elementary school in the US state of Connecticut.

"I have with deep sorrow heard about the news and on behalf of the Iranian nation, I extend my sincere condolences to the families of the victims and the people of America," ISNA news agency quoted the president as saying in a statement.

Ahmadinejad added that it was time for the US to revise its policies "based on materialistic profits", and instead work towards a world where people would "live beside each other on the basis of love, kindness and friendship".
